A new study shows that a constructed wetland-derived Clostridium sp. strain T4 efficiently decolorizes the azo dye Reactive Black 5 under anaerobic conditions by reductively cleaving its azo bonds. However, this process generates aromatic amine intermediates, including 1,7-diamino-8-hydroxynaphthalene and 4-(ethylsulfonyl)aniline. As these metabolites accumulate, acute toxicity to Daphnia magna increases, showing that visible dye removal alone is not a reliable indicator of wastewater treatment safety.
