Cozy games have ossified, and it's mostly thanks to Stardew Valley. These days, regardless of a cozy game's setting, you know exactly what to expect: warm vibes, happy people or those not entirely averse to becoming happy, a hearty welcome, and quick resolutions to every problem. The sameification is hardly surprising. When a single game takes a niche genre mainstream and sells millions of copies across every platform, it makes sense for others to try their hand at the formula, carefully preserving its fundamental parts. Understandable, but no less regrettable. There are signs that growth is finally happening, though.

Historically, when you took a car to a drag strip, the quarter-mile run involved continuous acceleration , and magazine acceleration testing actually mattered. Your vehicle would scream down the track, building velocity even beyond the finish line. The trap speed was a pure indicator of a vehicle's straight-line capability and its power-to-weight ratio. Today, manufacturers routinely drop 700 horsepower supercharged V8s and 1,000 horsepower electric drivetrains with instant torque into tall, heavy, brick-shaped SUVs, resulting in many of these cars' quarter-mile speeds no longer being bound by factors such as aerodynamic drag but rather by speed governors.

Social media is still processing The Chi finale. For the most part, the feedback has been consistently good. Who can argue with an ending where Emmett and Kiesha, whom we first met hooking up as teenagers (with Kiesha getting caught under the bed by Emmett’s mama Jada), have a beautiful wedding in the backyard of the home Jada shared with Emmett’s father Darnell?
