The Electrified GV70 Is Only Okay as an EV, but It’s a Great Luxury Car

Overview

Once one of our favorite luxury electric vehicles, the Genesis Electrified GV70 has fallen behind newer rivals that offer more tech and a longer driving range. All models are all-wheel drive thanks to a dual-motor electric powertrain with 483 horsepower. Acceleration is brisk; the Electrified GV70 hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds at our test track.

Inside, Genesis’s usual array of premium materials and good fit and finish is on display, just as it is in the gas-powered GV70. A large 27.0-inch touchscreen stretches across much of the dashboard and features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you can accept a shorter driving range than EV rivals from BMW, Cadillac, and Volvo, the Genesis is a stylish and luxurious choice. If not, there are plenty of alternatives.

Expert Tip: Rumor has it a GV70 with an extended-range electric powertrain is coming to market in the next year. EREV powertrains operate like full EVs but come with an onboard gasoline engine that kicks on to replenish the battery en route to extend the overall driving range.

What's New for 2027?

With the competition pulling ahead, Genesis saw fit to drop the Electrified GV70’s base price by over $5000 this year, but in the process, it loses its standard panoramic sunroof. Don’t worry, though, you can still get the sunroof by upgrading to the Advanced or Prestige trim, both of which have also received price reductions.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

EV Motors: 483-hp dual motor
Drivetrain: all-wheel drive

All-wheel drive is standard on the Electrified GV70, and it uses two motors, one on each axle, to achieve its combined 483-hp rating. Like its gas-powered sibling, the Electrified GV70 feels light on its feet in corners and offers a comfortable ride. Our primary complaint with the Electrified's road manners is its odd brake-pedal feel, which isn't consistent through its travel from regenerative braking to the point where friction braking begins.

0–60-MPH Times

C/D 60-mph Test: 3.8 seconds

In Comparison: The Electrified GV70 hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds at our test track, which makes it the quickest version of Genesis's compact SUV. We tested the regular 2022 GV70 with the optional twin-turbocharged V-6 and made it to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Towing and Payload Capacity

Max Towing: 3500 pounds

In Comparison: Towing duties aren’t ideal for electric vehicles, but the Electrified GV70’s 3500-pound towing maximum is good enough for light trailers and small boats. The BMW iX3’s 4400-pound maximum unlocks a little bit more capability.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

C/D Range Test: 190 miles
EPA EV Range: 243-263 miles

The EPA says the Electrified GV70’s driving range with 19-inch wheels is 263 miles per charge. When equipped with optional 20-inch wheels, the estimated range drops to 243 miles.

The Electrified's charging system can max out at 240 kW on a DC fast-charging connection. Genesis says that's quick enough to get the battery from 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes. In our testing, it proved to be one of the quickest charging EVs, able to add 100 miles of charging range in just 13 minutes on a DC fast charger.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

EPA City Ratings: 96-103 MPGe
EPA Highway Ratings: 80-88 MPGe

The EPA says the Electrified GV70 should deliver as much as 103 MPGe city, 88 MPGe highway, and 96 MPGe combined. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV fuel efficiency. For more information about the Electrified GV70's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The Electrified GV70 shares its interior with its gasoline-powered counterpart, which means it wears a similarly impressive design and offers an upscale ambiance. We like how the sweeping lines of the exterior carry into an interior lined with fine materials. The knurled metal shift dial and smaller control surfaces remind us of the finishes in Bentleys. Interior space is appropriate for the compact-SUV class.

Second Row: The GV70 has adequate legroom for back-seat riders, and the handsome appointments continue in the rear.

Cargo Capacity: Cargo space is nearly identical to the gas model. We fit seven carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats and 22 in total with the rear seats stowed.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment: 27.0-inch touchscreen
Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Audio System: 9-speaker stereo (standard), 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo (optional)

A large 27.0-inch widescreen infotainment display stands proud on the dash and runs the latest version of Genesis's software interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and work with a wireless connection. All models come with a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium Lexicon stereo system is available as an option. The base model comes with a nine-speaker stereo; a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo is standard on Advanced and Prestige trims.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A full suite of driver-assistance features is standard on every Electrified GV70 model, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

The Genesis brand offers excellent warranty coverage that stretches for far longer than most other premium automakers. The GV70 comes with powertrain coverage for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.
