Land Rover Is Electrifying Its Flagship Range Rover SUV. Is It Ready to Go on Safari?

By Drew DorianOverview
In the 1970s, the Land Rover Range Rover’s all-conquering four-wheel-drive system and fancy interior convinced the wealthy it was fun to dip their diamonds in the mud. Or at least look like they could do it if they wanted to. Now the company’s top model takes a revolutionary step, entering the fully electric era as the 2027 Range Rover Electric
Expert Tip: A plug-in hybrid variant of the gas-powered Range Rover is also available for those who aren’t yet ready to make the EV leap.

What's New for 2027?
The Range Rover Electric is a new addition to the Land Rover lineup for 2027.
What's Your Car Worth?
Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
- EV Motors: 542-hp dual motor
- Drivetrain: all-wheel drive
All Range Rover Electrics come with the same powertrain, a dual-motor setup with 542 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and Land Rover has fitted it with an electronic traction management system that monitors for wheel slip and can react in just 50 milliseconds. A height-adjustable air-spring suspension system is included and can raise the Range Rover Electric for additional ground clearance when traveling off-road.
0–60-MPH Times
- Claimed 60-mph Time: 4.3 seconds
In Comparison: Although the Cadillac Escalade IQ has more horsepower, it only managed a 4.5-second run to 60 mph in our testing.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
- EPA EV Range: 333 miles
Under the Range Rover Electric’s floorboards is a large 118.5-kWh battery pack. EPA estimated range is 333 miles per charge, and when hooked up to a 350-kW DC fast charger, Land Rover says that the Range Rover Electric can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: As is expected from Land Rover’s flagship model, the Range Rover Electric offers a plush interior decked out with rich leathers and woods. But buyers who want more sustainable cabin materials can opt for a new leather-free option, which substitutes wool or other textiles.
Second Row: The interior can be arranged to seat four, five, or seven, depending on configuration and wheelbase. There’s plenty of room in the second row, and major spread-out legroom in the long-wheelbase version.
Third Row: The third row, even in long-wheelbase trims, may not fit tall adults, as the headroom back there is limited. But shorter riders and kids will find it nearly as comfortable as the second row.
Cargo Capacity: An optional motorized divider for the cargo area helps keep things from sliding around during travel, and the bottom half of the Range Rover's split rear liftgate can be flipped down like a pickup truck's tailgate and used as convenient and comfortable seating for outdoor events.
Standard-length models can hold up to 40.7 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and 83.5 cubic feet with them stowed. The long-wheelbase models provide almost 92.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity, but only 8.7 cubic feet behind the third row. Cargo room is identical to the gas version. In our testing of a gas model, the short-wheelbase version fit two carry-on suitcases behind the third row. With the third row folded, we fit 15 cases; with all seats stowed, we fit 32.
Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 13.1-inch touchscreen
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audio System: 15-speaker Meridian stereo (standard), 19-speaker Meridian stereo (optional), 35-speaker Meridian stereo (optional), 21-speaker SV Electrostatic stereo (optional)
All models receive a 13.1-inch curved infotainment display with Land Rover's latest Pivi Pro interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and the system also receives Amazon's Alexa voice assistant.
Other standard features include in-dash navigation, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 13.7-inch digital gauge display. A rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.4-inch displays is available, as is a Meridian audio system with 35 speakers and noise-canceling technology embedded in the headrests.
The top stereo choice, though, is the SV Electrostatic system, which uses 21 lightweight electrostatic speakers throughout the cabin to deliver the highest fidelity audio. It pairs with transducers in the Range Rover's seatbacks and footwells that provide the tactile feeling of bass without muddying the sound with a giant subwoofer.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Land Rover offers a host of driver-assistance features as standard on the Range Rover, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
- Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control
