Oldest known giant rock scallop bead suggests California coastal trade began millennia earlier

Study identifies the oldest known giant rock scallop bead, dated to 8,500 years ago

Archaeologists have discovered two giant rock scallop beads that push back the clock on the first appearance of these high-status ornaments. The discovery shows that these prized marine beads were traded hundreds of miles from the California coast thousands of years earlier than previously thought.

Radiocarbon dating places one of the beads at roughly 8,500 years old, making it the oldest ever discovered. More unusually, they were found more than 42 miles (68 kilometers) from the nearest coast, extending the known range of these ornaments from the Channel Islands to the California interior.

"It's cool that this is the oldest of its kind identified so far, but cooler still to view it as part of a broader Early Holocene cultural landscape seemingly well-established in this locale as much as 10,000 years ago," said Barry A. Price, an archaeologist at Applied EarthWorks Inc. and one of the study's authors, along with Simone Schinsing and Jasmine Kidwell. The study is published in California Archaeology.

Far from home

The giant rock scallop's usual home is the warm waters of the Santa Barbara Channel, where ancient Indigenous people, including the Chumash and their neighbors, often fashioned them into beads, the study said.

Giant rock scallops grow below the tide line, making them a challenge to reach, and their thick, hard shells make them difficult to shape and drill. This combination of rarity, effort and skill required to produce them may have led the beads to become markers of high status.

The two beads from this study were found during excavations of the Turkey Flats and Lichtenstein sites between 2012 and 2020, before construction of the California Flats Solar Project, a massive 280-megawatt solar project in Monterey County.

In hopes of documenting and preserving any cultural heritage still in the ground, archaeologists were sent to the site alongside representatives of the Salinan, Chumash and Yokuts tribes, who granted permission to date the beads.

The beads were sent for dating, and as their ages were calculated, their true antiquity came to light. The globe-shaped bead from the Turkey Flats site was dated to 8,508 years old, making it the oldest giant scallop shell bead ever discovered.

The Lichtenstein scallop was much younger, dating to 3,674 years old, but together the two shells hint at a more than 5,000-year-old tradition and enduring trade between coastal people and inland communities long before recorded history.

Tracing ancient trade routes

While the researchers knew the shells came from the coast, they wanted to know whether they were connected to the Channel Island tradition. To do this, they turned to oxygen and carbon isotope analysis.

Much like a fingerprint, the analysis identifies unique chemical markers in the shells and compares them with those of regions that share the same signature.

The Lichtenstein shell returned an ambiguous fingerprint, possibly originating in central or Southern California. The older Turkey Flats shell, however, came back with a definitive answer, pointing to a Southern California origin, even farther from the inland sites than the nearest stretch of coastline.

"There's a more-than-reasonable chance the beads were manufactured on the Channel Islands and moved northward via networks of trade that could have extended for hundreds of miles," Price said. "That's the most likely scenario, though it's also possible that individuals from the Channel Islands or Santa Barbara coast carried them northward as part of their personal ornamentation."

These beads were special not only because they were old or because they were found so far away. According to Price, working with tribal representatives helped shape the researchers' approach to the discovery.

These beads weren't just archaeological artifacts. "Shell beads served as markers of social status and prestige, as sacred objects that played a role in various ceremonies and accompanied people to their graves, as ornaments for personal adornment or decorative purposes, and as money and a medium of exchange," Price said.

For Price, the value of these small beads goes well beyond dates and distances.

"It's not really about these two little beads or any other artifacts we might find," Price said. "It's about what they tell us about the human condition, about how people lived and died and adapted to changing conditions ... These things help us recognize, understand and appreciate the tribal people whose lands we stole and cultures we destroyed, and they validate and lift up their descendants."
