Overwatch Is Getting the Critical Role Treatment With Upcoming TTRPG Adventure

Blizzard Entertainment hasn't been shy about mixing the epic world of its free-to-play (F2P) hero-shooter Overwatch with franchises and brands. It's teamed up with Burger King, Fortnite, and even Hello Kitty. That has meant a lot of cool skins and even some fun events, but nothing truly groundbreaking.

However, Overwatch's next event will combine the sci-fi reality of its setting with something far more fantastical — and just as fun: tabletop role-playing games. Questwatch, the first-ever Overwatch TTRPG adventure, will be held live at Blizzard's BlizzCon on Sept 13. The event features Matthew Mercer, best known for his role as Dungeon Master for Critical Role and its Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, as well as for voicing Overwatch’s cowboy hotshot, Cassidy.

Mercer will serve as the game master for the event and will lead four other heroes on a new adventure through Overland. Currently, we don’t know which heroes will join Mercer or what system they will play, but Critical Role's own TTRPG, Daggerheart, seems the most probable answer, considering that, in the image shared by Blizzard, Cassidy is holding two d12 (the type of dice prominently used in Daggerheart). More information about Questwatch will be revealed during BlizzCon’s opening ceremony.

As a character, Cassidy is probably not the obvious choice to lead a TTRPG. That sort of hobby seems more in Lucio's, Sombra's, or D.Va's wheelhouse, but when it comes to navigating people on a fantasy adventure, it makes sense that Blizzard would go with someone as creative and skilled at narrating tabletop role-playing games as Mercer is.

While not an official Critical Role collaboration, we speculate that such a partnership could be on the way. After all, Critical Role only continues to grow, and the fantasy element of the company's Dungeons & Dragons campaigns makes it easier to adapt skins and/or characters to Blizzard's hero-shooter.

Even if there isn't a collaboration between Critical Role and Overwatch in the future, we shouldn't rule out the potential of an Overwatch TTRPG. After all, popular IPs like Star Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender are getting attention from Wizards of the Coast — who's to say Overwatch won't get the same treatment in the future? Blizzard's other hot gaming IP, World of Warcraft, is getting an official D&D book, coming this November.

For now, however, Blizzard is looking to put an extra fantasy spin on its popular hero-shooter. What system will be used, as well as whether this adventure will reflect changes or events within Overwatch itself, will be revealed during BlizzCon's opening ceremony on Sept. 12.
