Monster Hunter Outlanders is an upcoming mobile game that looks surprisingly accurate to the series

The next Monster Hunter game is out soon, although it may not be what you expect. Monster Hunter Outlanders is a free-to-play, mobile-only installment being developed by TiMi Studio Group. That may not sound particularly appealing, but before you dismiss Outlanders out of hand, it’s worth noting that, for a mobile title, what we’ve seen so far looks surprisingly similar to traditional entries in the series.

The game's latest trailer shows the beginning of a hunt against a massive dragon. The player slashes with their long sword, rolls out of incoming attacks, and manages their health bar while coordinating with three other players. There are also eight buttons on the screen, which is how you know this is a real MonHun game. Thankfully, it will have controller support, because this doesn’t seem like the kind of thing you’d want to play without it. We’ll find out just how closely the game plays to its traditional counterparts when it releases on Oct. 29, 2026.

What other details do we know about Monster Hunter Outlanders?

There’s been quite a long wait for Monster Hunter Outlanders, as this mobile title was first announced on Nov. 9, 2022. Its developer, TiMi Studio Group, is a Tencent subsidiary that previously worked on games such as Pokémon Unite and Call of Duty: Mobile. Like other Monster Hunter games, Outlanders has exploration, crafting, social elements including four-player co-op, and, of course, monster hunting. The response to its closed beta tests has largely been positive, with players complimenting how close the core combat compares to previous installments in the series.

That said, the biggest question mark is how Outlanders' monetization will feel. As a free-to-play title, there are justified worries that this will be another live-service slog that seeks to monopolize your time and wallet. As for what Capcom has revealed, this is a gacha game where players roll for different adventurers, which are preset characters with different weapon specialties and unique abilities. It has the standard genre elements of a “pity system” where you are guaranteed to get an SSR character after 90 pulls, with that pity pull having a 50% chance of being the featured banner character.

Of course, how easy it is to get pulls and how much better SSR characters are than their less rare counterparts will determine whether this system feels extremely exploitative or only slightly exploitative — all gacha games have at least a little sleaze, after all. We’ll see if the grind is worth it when Monster Hunter Outlanders comes out for iOS and Android in a month.
