There’s just something irresistible about watching characters throw their lives and their sanity away for the chance to sleep with the object of their desires. Like Basic Instinct, in which detective Nick Curran falls into bed with Catherine Tramell, a crime novelist who might just be describing the murder he’s investigating. It makes no sense, but everyone involved is so committed to their melodramatic vision that it works.
Whenever Hollywood latches obsessively onto the oeuvre of a pop novelist du jour, the law of averages dictates that the ensuing spate of films can’t be all bad: More than a couple of those ’90s John Grisham-based potboilers were solid, while in “The Notebook,” we actually got one Nicholas Sparks movie that people remember two decades later. Four films in, however, we’re still waiting for the Colleen Hoover adaptation that makes her books’ vast popularity at all clear to the unconverted. A dunderheaded riff on “Rebecca” filtered through a Clinton-era erotic thriller aesthetic, “Verity” at least has a clearer narrative hook than the variously dull “It Ends With Us,” “Regretting You” and “Reminders of Him,” which have collectively racked up over half a billion dollars in the last two years. But it’s a flat-footed dud, at once overwrought and underplotted, and barely propped up by A-list stars who look either embarrassed, confused or indifferent to be there.

Starting in November, Fire TV users in the US will get access to new Alexa+ experiences on their TV interface and the mobile app. They will feature a new hub for the AI-powered assistant, with personalized prompt suggestions based on their history. Alexa+ will be updated with reasoning capabilities, enabling it to answer more complex questions. It will be able to draw from the user's subscriptions, watch history and even real-world current affairs. For instance, it can answer questions like "Alexa, find shows that were nominated for the recent Emmys but got snubbed" or "Alexa, show me MCU films based on their in-universe timeline order."
